Colourised Photos

Design Notes:

​This is a photo of Herb "Cowboy" Humphrey, my second great-grandfather. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Herb Humphrey is credited with bringing the first Quarter Horses into Cache Valley, Utah, where Herb died in 1961.

Design Development:

I needed to colorize each element in the photo individually, so I created new layers for each element by selecting and masking each individual object and filling in the selections with appropriate colors.  

 

After choosing a color for each element, I adjusted the hue and saturation values, contrast and brightness values, and utilized color blending modes in order to emulate realistic tones. For the coat and hat, I used reddish-brown photo filters to get a more accurate tan color than I could achieve on my own.
